Language Learning Opinion Writing

A youth centre is planning a language-learning club. Write a persuasive opinion piece recommending whether the club should offer one language or let learners choose from several. Use the information in the brief, build a clear argument, and consider a different viewpoint.

Planning brief

The youth centre has room for a weekly language club. It can either teach one language to everyone or offer a choice of two languages. The organiser wants sessions to be welcoming, practical and enjoyable.

A shared language could help everyone practise together and make planning easier.

Offering a choice could help learners connect with family, friends or places that matter to them.

Learning another language can help people communicate across cultures.

A club will work best if activities include speaking, listening and games—not just memorising word lists.

Build your argument

Answer in note form first. You can recommend one shared language, offer a choice, or suggest another workable plan.

1.Which plan do you recommend for the youth centre: one shared language, a choice of two, or another option? State your position in one clear sentence.

2.Choose your strongest reason. Explain how it supports your recommendation, using one detail from the planning brief.

3.Add a second reason. Include a specific example of an activity that could help learners practise the language.

4.What might someone who disagrees with your recommendation say? Write one fair counterargument.

5.Reply to that counterargument. Use a linking phrase such as “however”, “although” or “on the other hand”.

6.Improve this claim so it gives a reason: “Learning a language is good.”

7.Write a persuasive opening sentence for your piece. Make your recommendation clear and give the reader a reason to keep reading.

Draft your opinion piece

Write one or two organised paragraphs. Include your position, at least two developed reasons, an example, a counterargument and a reply, and a concluding sentence. Use linking words to guide your reader.

8.Write your complete opinion piece recommending a plan for the youth centre’s language club. Use your notes, but make sure your ideas flow together.

9.Re-read your draft. Name one change you made—or would make—to strengthen your argument, and explain why it helps the reader.
