The Night Forager

A little kiwi noses through the night, Its soft feet patter past the fern. Damp earth, dark leaves, a silver light— It stops, then listens, waits, and turns. Scratch, scrape, sniff: its beak probes deep, Where wriggling worms hide from the cold. The forest hushes while it seeks; The moon lays bright paths on the mould.
