Personal Poetry Creation

Use the prompts to shape a poem that sounds like you. Choose details and descriptive words that help a reader imagine your personality, hopes and point of view. You may write in phrases or complete sentences. Then reflect on your choices and plan an illustration.

Build your poem

Jot down ideas for each line. You can rearrange or edit them when you put your poem together.

1.Write the first name you would like to use in your poem.
2.Choose four words that describe you. Try to include at least one word that shows how you act and one that describes something you enjoy.
3.Complete this poem line with two people, places or experiences that have helped shape you: “I grew from ______ and ______.”
4.Name three things you love. Add a precise detail to one of them so a reader can picture it.
5.Write a line beginning “I am curious about…” and finish it with something you hope to discover or understand.
6.Write a line about something that can make you feel unsure or nervous. Share only what you are comfortable sharing.
7.What is something kind or helpful you offer to other people? Turn it into a poem line.
8.Complete this line with something important to your wellbeing: “I need ______.”
9.Imagine one thing you would love to see happen in the future. Describe it in a line that begins “One day, I hope to see…”
10.Choose how you want to sign your finished poem: use a family name, a nickname, or no name.

Shape your voice

Look back over your ideas. You can change words, add sound patterns, or use a comparison to make a line more vivid.

11.Which line from your poem gives the clearest sense of what you are like? Explain what it helps the reader understand.
12.Pick one descriptive word from your poem. What picture, feeling or idea might that word create for a reader?
13.Plan an illustration for your poem. What colours, objects or symbols could show one of its ideas?
Use this space to try out your symbols, colours and layout.
