📖 Reading Passage

The Amazing Monarch Butterfly

Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies begin an incredible journey. These orange and black butterflies travel up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the northern United States to Mexico. This amazing trip takes them about two months to complete.

What makes this journey so remarkable is that the butterflies have never been to Mexico before. They use the sun and landmarks to navigate, just like sailors used stars long ago. The monarchs fly during the day and rest in trees at night. Sometimes thousands of butterflies cluster together on a single tree branch.

When the monarchs reach Mexico, they spend the winter in the warm mountain forests. In spring, they begin the journey back north, but most won't make it all the way home. Instead, they lay eggs along the way. It takes three or four generations of butterflies to complete the full trip back to Canada. Scientists are still puzzled about how these tiny creatures know exactly where to go.
