Reading Fluency and Vocabulary

Read the passage once for meaning, then read it aloud again. Notice punctuation, work out unfamiliar words from clues, and explain how you know.

The bookshop’s mystery shelf

On Saturday, Nathan, Hemi and Isla visited a bookshop near the waterfront. A handwritten sign announced a “mystery shelf”: each book was wrapped in brown paper, so shoppers had to choose by reading a short clue. Nathan picked a book described as “a brisk adventure with a resourceful hero”. She paused at resourceful. The sentence suggested that the hero could solve problems with what was available, rather than waiting for help. Nathan guessed the word meant able to find clever ways around difficulties. Hemi chose a story whose clue called its setting “desolate”. The cover showed a windswept coast, but Hemi checked the surrounding words too: “No houses, no voices and no lights broke the silence.” He decided desolate meant lonely and empty. Isla selected a book described as “an intriguing puzzle”. She recognised that intrigue could mean to arouse curiosity, so intriguing probably meant interesting or mysterious. The three friends took turns reading the clues aloud. They did not race. Instead, they paused at commas, lifted their voices slightly for questions and changed their tone to make each clue sound suspenseful. When they finished, they compared their guesses with the books inside. Their choices were different, but each had used evidence from the wording to make a thoughtful prediction.
