Roman Republic Government Structure
📖 Reading Passage: The Roman Republic Government
Long ago, the Romans created a government called the Roman Republic. This government lasted for about 500 years. The Romans wanted to make sure no one person had too much power. So they split the government into three main parts. Each part had different jobs and could check on the other parts.
The Senate
The Senate was like a group of advisors. It had about 300 members. These were older men who had worked in government before. The Senate's main job was to give advice about important decisions. They also controlled money and made treaties with other countries. The Senate could declare war too. Most senators were from rich families called patricians.
The Consuls
The Consuls were like presidents. But Rome always had exactly two Consuls at the same time. They served for only one year. The Consuls were the leaders of the army. They also made sure laws were followed. If one Consul wanted to do something bad, the other Consul could stop him. This was called "veto power."
The Assemblies
The Assemblies were groups where Roman citizens could vote. Only men could be citizens and vote. Women, slaves, and foreigners could not vote. There were different assemblies for different types of people. Rich citizens (patricians) and common people (plebeians) often voted in separate groups. The assemblies chose who would be Consuls and other leaders. They also voted on some laws.
This system worked because each part could limit the others. The Consuls couldn't make all the decisions alone. The Senate couldn't control the army directly. The assemblies chose the leaders but couldn't run the government day-to-day. This balance of power influenced many governments that came later, including the United States.
