SCAR Narrative Writing Guide
Use SCAR to plan, draft and check a narrative. SCAR stands for Setting, Character, Action and Resolution. Invent your own story.
Plan with SCAR
Jot down ideas before you begin your story.
1.SETTING: Where and when will your story happen? Add a detail about the weather, season or time of day.
2.CHARACTER: Who is the main character? Describe one feature of their appearance and how they feel at the beginning.
3.ACTION: What unexpected problem interrupts the character's day, and what do they try to do about it?
4.RESOLUTION: How is the problem sorted out? How does the character feel at the end?
Draft your story
Write one paragraph for each part of SCAR. Use your plan, then add details to make the story clear and interesting.
5.SETTING paragraph: Begin with a time or weather detail. Then show where the story takes place.
6.CHARACTER paragraph: Introduce the main character. Include an appearance detail and show how they feel.
7.ACTION paragraph: Bring in the problem. Explain what the character does next and include a detail about what happens.
8.RESOLUTION paragraph: Finish the story by explaining how the problem is resolved and how the character feels afterwards.
