Solar System Facts Worksheet

A storm has interrupted the lighthouse’s night-sky display. Help Finn, Talia and Losa rebuild a fact file about our Solar System. Read the facts and complete each mission. Use the word bank where shown. Word bank: Earth, Neptune, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter.

Read the mission notes

The Solar System includes the Sun and everything held by its gravity. The Sun is a star at its centre. Eight planets travel around it in this order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter is the largest planet; Mercury is the smallest. Mars looks reddish and is often called the Red Planet, while Venus is the hottest planet. Saturn is famous for its bright rings, and some other giant planets also have rings. Earth spins on its axis once about every 24 hours. The side facing the Sun has day; the side turned away has night. Earth’s natural satellite is called its lunar companion.

Mission 1: Planet patrol

Use the mission notes to solve each clue.

1.Finn needs the biggest planet for the display. Which planet should he choose?
  • Earth
  • Jupiter
  • Mars
  • Venus
2.Talia spots a reddish-looking planet. Name it and give its nickname.
3.Which planet do the mission notes specifically describe as famous for its bright rings?
  • Jupiter
  • Earth
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Mars
4.How many planets orbit the Sun in our Solar System?

Mission 2: Orbit order

The lighthouse display has lost some of its labels. Put them back in order.

5.Number these planets from 1 (closest to the Sun) to 4 (fourth from the Sun): Earth, Mars, Mercury, Venus.
6.Complete the orbit trail using the word bank: Earth, Neptune, Saturn. Mercury → Venus → → Mars → Jupiter → → Uranus →
7.The display says, “Venus is the hottest planet.” Is this true or false?

Mission 3: Explain the sky

Use evidence from the notes and your science knowledge to help finish the fact file.

8.What is at the centre of our Solar System, and what kind of object is it?
9.What is Earth’s natural satellite called?
10.Explain how Earth’s spin causes day and night.
11.Create a short fact-file sentence about one planet. Include its name and one accurate fact from the mission notes.
