Sports Captain Student Contract

A sports captain helps everyone feel welcome, safe and ready to play. Read each situation and make thoughtful choices. Then complete your personal commitments. This contract is a plan for positive leadership—not a promise to be perfect.

Lead with fair play

Think about how a captain can make sport enjoyable and fair for the whole team.

1.A new player is nervous and has not touched the ball yet. What is the best captain’s response?

Invite them into the play and encourage them when they try
Tell them to watch until they are more skilled
Pass only to the strongest players
Ignore them and focus on the score

2.Your team disagrees with the umpire’s decision. Write one respectful thing you could say or do.

3.Choose every action that shows good sportsmanship.

Congratulate the other team after the game
Blame a teammate when a pass goes wrong
Follow the rules even when no one is watching
Celebrate effort as well as winning
Leave equipment scattered for someone else

4.A teammate makes a mistake and looks discouraged. Write a short, encouraging message you could give them.

Plan for the team

A captain helps sport run smoothly and makes participation welcoming.

5.Before a lunchtime game starts, what should a responsible captain do? Choose all suitable actions.

Check that the playing area is safe
Explain or remind players of the rules
Make sure everyone gets a fair chance to join in
Start immediately without checking equipment
Ask an adult for help if there is an injury or safety concern

6.Put these game-day jobs in a sensible order by numbering them 1–4: pack equipment away; check the space and equipment; welcome players and explain the rules; play and encourage fair participation.

7.Your team has only one ball, and two groups both want to play. Suggest a fair plan so everyone gets a turn.

8.A player is hurt during a game. What should you do first?

Stop play and get a teacher or supervising adult
Move the player quickly so the game can continue
Ask the player to keep playing
Leave the player alone while you finish the game
