Te Tiriti o Waitangi, often called the Treaty of Waitangi in English, is an agreement first signed in 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and many Māori rangatira (chiefs). The Māori-language text and English-language text differ in important ways, so people have discussed what the promises mean. These cards introduce useful words for learning about the Treaty. TREATY — a formal agreement between groups. RANGATIRA — a Māori leader or chief. RANGATIRATANGA — chiefly authority and the ability to make decisions; its meaning is discussed in relation to the Treaty. KĀWANATANGA — governance or governing authority; a key word in the Māori text of the Treaty. TAONGA — treasures or things highly valued, including objects, language, knowledge and places. TINO RANGATIRATANGA — the full exercise of authority and self-determination, especially in relation to Māori communities and their taonga. PĀKEHĀ — a term commonly used for New Zealanders of European descent. PARTNERSHIP — working together and making decisions in a relationship. It is an important idea in discussions about the Treaty.
