A safer home for the kākāpō
The kākāpō is a rare parrot found only in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is heavy for a parrot and cannot fly, but it can climb using its powerful legs and claws. Because kākāpō nest on the ground and cannot fly to escape, their numbers fell to a very low level. Conservation teams now care for kākāpō on islands where introduced predators have been removed. Workers check nests, help protect eggs and chicks, and keep track of each bird. The work takes patience and careful planning. Although the kākāpō remains at risk, its numbers have increased from the tiny population that survived. The recovery shows what can happen when people work together to protect a species.
