Rainforest Biome Discovery

Read the field notes and use the evidence and information in each question to solve each question. Use complete sentences where asked.

Field notes: the Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree Rainforest in Queensland is a tropical rainforest. Warm temperatures and frequent rain help many kinds of plants grow. Its layers provide different habitats: emergent trees rise above the canopy; the canopy is a leafy roof; the understory is shaded below it; and the forest floor is damp and receives little sunlight. Plants use sunlight to make food. Animals depend on plants and other animals for food and shelter. Decomposers such as fungi break down dead material and return nutrients to the soil. If one population changes, other parts of the ecosystem can be affected.

1.Use the field notes to identify the layer that forms a leafy roof.
  • Emergent layer
  • Canopy
  • Understory
  • Forest floor
2.A small animal needs shade and shelter among lower branches. Which rainforest layer is most likely to suit it? Explain using one detail from the field notes.
3.Use this food-web information: frogs eat insects, and snakes eat frogs. Which animal eats the frog?
4.According to the field notes, which source provides the energy plants use to make food?
  • Fungi
  • Sunlight
  • Soil
  • Rain
5.Imagine that the insect population becomes much smaller. Frogs eat insects. Name one organism that may have less food, and explain why.
6.Fungi break down dead material. How does this help plants in the rainforest?
7.The forest floor receives more sunlight than the emergent layer. Decide whether this is true or false and correct the statement if needed.
TrueFalse
8.Fill in the missing word: Living things and the non-living parts of their environment interact in an .
9.Match each organism role to its description.
  • Producer
  • Consumer
  • Decomposer
  • An animal that gets energy by eating plants or other animals
  • A plant that makes its own food using sunlight
  • An organism that breaks down dead material
10.Suppose a long dry period causes rainforest plants to produce less fruit. Fruit-eating birds may then have less food, and snakes eat birds. Predict one possible effect on the bird population and one possible effect on the snake population. Explain your reasoning.
11.Draw a simple rainforest profile showing the emergent layer, canopy, understory and forest floor. Add one organism in a suitable layer and label it.
