Exit Hooks Practice

Arjun, Hamish and Grace are making handwritten signs for the aquarium. Practise smooth exit hooks so the next letter can join neatly. Use your usual cursive handwriting. Keep letters sitting on the line, and make each hook small and tidy.

Warm up: smooth hooks

An exit hook is the small finishing stroke that curves out of a letter and helps lead into the next letter. Practise gently rather than pressing hard.

1.Trace the sample letters, then write each one three times on the lines. Finish each letter with a smooth exit hook: h h h k k k

2.Choose the best description of an exit hook in cursive writing.

3.Copy these aquarium words in cursive. Take care with the h and k: shark, kelp, tank, hatchling.

Write for the aquarium

The aquarium team needs clear signs that visitors can read quickly. Copy carefully, then make your own sign sentence.

6.Copy this sign in cursive, giving the h and k neat exit hooks: “Look for the shark near the rock.”

7.Which sentence is easiest to read? Circle one and explain what makes the handwriting clear: (A) letters sit on the line and join smoothly; (B) letters are squashed together and hooks are oversized.

8.Write a short aquarium sign using at least two words that contain h or k. Include a full stop and make the words easy to read.
