Material Properties Investigation

A sudden storm is on its way to a bushwalking shelter. Your team must choose a material to cover a supply box. Investigate which material resists water best, then use your results to make a recommendation. Work safely: use small amounts of water and wipe up spills.

Plan a fair test

Use four squares of material that are the same size. Stretch each over an identical cup and secure it in the same way. Add 10 mL of water to each square. After one minute, measure how much water has dripped into the cup. Repeat the test and calculate the average. Keep the material area, water amount, waiting time and cup type the same. Change only the material.

1.Which material property is being tested when you measure how much water passes through a material?
  • Water resistance (how little water passes through)
  • Hardness
  • Flexibility
  • Texture
2.In this investigation, what is the variable the team changes, and what is the variable the team measures?
3.Name two things the team should keep the same so that it is a fair test.
4.The average for cotton fabric is listed as 6 mL. Use its two trial results to show how the team could calculate this average.
5.Which material had the lowest average amount of water collected underneath it, and what was that average?
6.Which material would you recommend for covering the supply box if keeping it dry is the main goal? Use a result from the table as evidence.
7.Plastic wrap and aluminium foil both let very little water through. Give one reason the team should repeat each test instead of relying on only one trial.
8.Aluminium foil resisted water best in this test. Name one other property you would investigate before deciding whether it is the best real-world cover for a supply box, and explain why.
9.A team uses a large square of paper towel but a small square of plastic wrap. Explain why this could make their comparison unfair and how to improve it.
