Narrative Writing Assessment Rubric

Read your finished narrative from beginning to end. For questions 1–7, write one score from 1 to 5 for each feature: 1 = not yet, 2 = beginning, 3 = meeting the goal, 4 = strong, 5 = outstanding. Use evidence from your story to complete the reflection questions.

Rate your narrative

Choose the score that best describes what a reader can find in your story. A lower score is a useful next step, not a failure.

1.Title: Does the title suit the story and make a reader curious? Score your title from 1–5.

2.Characters: Can a reader tell who the important characters are and what they are like? Score your character writing from 1–5.

3.Setting: Have you used words in your narrative to show where and when the story happens and help readers imagine it? Score your setting from 1–5.

4.Opening: Does the beginning introduce the situation and give the reader a reason to keep going? Score your opening from 1–5.

5.Problem and build-up: Is there a challenge, and do events build towards an important moment? Score this part from 1–5.

6.Important moment and solution: Does the main event feel important, and do the characters try to deal with the challenge? Score these events from 1–5.

7.Ending: Does the ending show what happens after the challenge and leave the story feeling complete? Score your ending from 1–5.

Use evidence and plan a next step

Look back through your own narrative. Point to a specific moment or detail rather than giving a general answer.

8.What is one part of your narrative you are proud of? Name it and quote or describe one detail that shows why it works.

9.Choose one feature you scored 1, 2 or 3. If you scored every feature 4 or 5, choose one you would still like to improve. What is one change you could make to improve that part of your narrative?

10.Editing check: Write one sentence from your story that you checked for capital letters, full stops and correct spelling. What did you check or change?
