Narrative Writing Planning Worksheet
Use the prompts to plan an original narrative. Your ideas can be imaginative, but make sure your story has a clear beginning, problem and ending.
Build Your Story
1.Invent a main character for your narrative. Write their name and two traits that show what they are like.
2.Choose a place for your story. Which setting would give your character an interesting adventure?
- A lighthouse on a rocky coast
- A crowded market at closing time
- A hidden room beneath a library
- Another place I invent
3.Decide when your story happens. Give a time of day and a season, such as early morning in winter.
4.What unexpected difficulty disrupts your character's day? Describe the main problem in your story.
5.Plan a believable way for your character to deal with the problem and bring the story to an ending.
Choose Words and Dialogue
6.Select five words from this bank that could make your narrative more vivid: shadowy, dazzling, colossal, uneasy, weathered, murmuring, nimble, soggy.
7.Write three different sentence beginnings you might use to build suspense or show a change in the action.
8.Write one line of dialogue your character could say when the problem appears. Use quotation marks around the spoken words.
Check Your Narrative Plan
9.Match each narrative part with what it does.
- Orientation
- Complication
- Resolution
- A problem or challenge interrupts events
- Shows how the challenge is dealt with
- Introduces the character, setting and situation
10.Which punctuation choice correctly shows a character speaking in a story?
- Put quotation marks around the spoken words.
- Put a comma at the end of every sentence.
- Use a capital letter after every word.
- Leave out punctuation in dialogue.
11.Before drafting, choose the punctuation features you will check for: capital letters at sentence beginnings, full stops for statements, quotation marks for speech, and commas in lists. Which two will you pay closest attention to?
