New Perspective Writing Adventures

Writers can tell the same event from different points of view. Read the aquarium scene, then explore what each character might think and feel. Use clues from the scene and your imagination. For writing questions, there can be more than one good answer.

The aquarium mix-up

Talia and Xavier were watching the penguins at the aquarium when a keeper hurried over. Oliver, a young penguin, had slipped through an open gate into the visitor area. He waddled towards a bright red backpack and pecked at its shiny zip. Talia stepped back, surprised. Xavier called for a keeper instead of reaching for Oliver. The keeper gently guided Oliver back through the gate. Oliver gave a loud squawk as the gate clicked shut. The visitors clapped, but Oliver settled beside the other penguins and tucked his beak under one wing.

Find the viewpoints

Use details from the scene to think about how the event might seem different to each character.

Rewrite the moment

Choose a character and retell the moment Oliver was guided back. Use first-person words such as “I” and “my”. Include what your character noticed, thought and felt. There is no single correct story, but keep your ideas consistent with the scene.

7.Write 5–7 sentences from Oliver’s, Talia’s, Xavier’s or the keeper’s point of view. Show how the same event feels different to your chosen character.

8.Improve this sentence by adding a precise feeling and a clue: “Talia felt something when Oliver came near.”

9.A friend says, “Oliver squawked because he was angry.” Give one other possible reason for the squawk and explain why more than one interpretation is possible.
