The New Zealand Government has confirmed nine new industry-led secondary school subjects, with the first students expected to take them from 2029.
The announcement, made on 6 August 2026 by Education Minister Erica Stanford and Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis, covers subjects ranging from artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing to healthcare, construction and tourism.
For teachers, the short version is this: the subject names are now confirmed, but the detailed curriculum, assessment requirements and delivery guidance are still to come.
## What are the nine new secondary school subjects?

They are intended for students in Years 12 and 13 and will sit alongside subjects such as English, mathematics, history and physics. The Government says they will count towards the new national secondary school qualifications replacing NCEA and have the same formal status as other subjects.
## What will students learn in each subject?
The names are broad by design. These are supposed to be full-year curriculum subjects, not short workplace courses or training for a single job.
### Applied Intelligent Systems
Students will use low-code and no-code tools to design and evaluate AI-enabled workflows and autonomous agents. The proposed focus includes problem-solving, critical thinking and the practical use of AI in workplaces.
This is the subject most likely to be described as the new "AI subject", but that shorthand misses a useful distinction. It is focused on applied AI systems rather than computer science fundamentals or a standalone course in generative AI. The Government has previously said it may investigate a separate Year 13 generative AI subject.
### Construction and Built Environment
This subject will cover the materials, systems and practices that go into buildings. Students will consider safety, sustainability and how construction decisions affect the finished built environment.
### Energy and Infrastructure
Students will study energy, water, roading, extractive industries and other infrastructure systems. The proposed subject combines systems thinking with practical STEM knowledge and questions about resilience and resource use.
### Engineering Technology
Engineering Technology will introduce students to engineering systems, materials and technologies. Students will test and improve solutions and apply engineering thinking to real problems in areas such as automotive, aviation, rail, freight, maritime and public transport.
### Food and Fibre Systems
This subject treats food and fibre as a connected system, from natural resources and production through to value creation. Students will examine sustainability, trade-offs and real challenges facing the sector.
### Health Services and Care
Students will learn how health and wellbeing services work and build practical skills for safe, ethical and culturally responsive care. The subject is expected to introduce pathways into health, disability, aged care, mental health and community services.
### Hospitality Food and Beverage
The proposed curriculum combines culinary knowledge with hospitality operations and business. It is broader than learning to cook and is intended to show students the range of roles available across food, beverage and hospitality.
### Next-Gen Manufacturing
Students will work with modern manufacturing systems and technologies, using practical and digital skills to make, test and improve products and processes. Possible pathways include manufacturing, product design, automation, logistics and engineering.
### Tourism
Tourism will look at how people, places, businesses, policy and the environment combine to create visitor experiences. The subject is expected to include operations, destination management, sustainability, digital innovation and business leadership.
## When will the new subjects start?
The Government says the new industry-led subjects will be available from 2029 for students in Years 12 and 13.
There is a timing detail schools will want clarified. Under the wider qualification timetable, the New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) begins for Year 12 in 2029, while the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) begins for Year 13 in 2030. The safest reading is that the industry-led rollout starts in 2029, with more detail still needed on exactly when every subject becomes available at each year level.
The broader transition currently looks like this:

Students already progressing through NCEA are not expected to switch qualification systems partway through secondary school. The current Year 10 cohort is due to be the first affected by the 2028 Year 11 changes.
## Are all nine subjects completely new?
Not in the everyday sense.
Many New Zealand schools already offer learning related to tourism, hospitality, agriculture, construction, automotive engineering and healthcare through NCEA standards, trades academies or partnerships with tertiary providers. The Government's own subject notes say several of the new subjects align strongly with programmes schools already deliver.
What is new is their place in the qualification structure. Industry Skills Boards are leading the subject design, and the subjects will become national curriculum subjects assessed within the same qualification framework as academically oriented subjects.
That shift matters. It could make vocational learning easier to understand and give it more weight when students build a programme across Years 12 and 13. Whether it works that way in practice will depend on the final curriculum, assessment design, staffing and what each school can realistically offer.
## How do these subjects fit the NCEA replacement?
NCEA is being replaced by two subject-based qualifications:
- the **New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE)** at Year 12
- the **New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE)** at Year 13
Students will study at least five subjects each year. Each subject will include internal assessment and an examination, although the balance will vary according to the subject.
The nine industry-led subjects are being built for that system. The Government says a student could combine traditional and industry-led subjects in one programme, so a learner might take English, mathematics and physics alongside Engineering Technology and Energy and Infrastructure.
The aim is to create a clearer route between school, tertiary study, apprenticeships, industry training and work without placing vocational subjects in a separate, lower-status qualification.
## What does the announcement mean for teachers now?
It does not mean departments need to rewrite courses this term.
The useful work for schools in 2026 and 2027 is likely to be mapping what they already offer, identifying staff expertise and watching for consultation material. A school may already have strong foundations for Tourism or Construction and Built Environment but need new partnerships, equipment or professional learning to deliver Applied Intelligent Systems or Energy and Infrastructure.

It also says subjects may be taught through normal school timetables, school facilities or partnerships with outside providers.
Before schools can make firm timetable decisions, they will need answers on:
- the final curriculum content at each year level
- assessment and examination requirements
- teacher professional learning and subject guidance
- facilities, equipment and health and safety expectations
- access for small, rural and remote schools
- how outside providers and Trades Academies can support delivery
- university entrance and prerequisite recognition
Those details will determine whether the new subjects widen student choice across the country or remain easier for larger, better-resourced schools to offer.
## What should parents and students know?
Students choosing senior subjects today are still choosing within the current NCEA system. The new industry-led subjects are aimed at the cohorts moving into the replacement qualifications from 2029.
The announcement is useful as an early signal, especially for students interested in AI, engineering, health, construction, primary industries, hospitality or tourism. It is not yet a course-selection guide. Subject availability will depend on the final national curriculum and on what individual schools can provide.
