On Friday evening, the Cedar Bay Community Centre was setting up for its winter festival. At six o’clock, volunteer Gabriel placed the old brass lantern on a table beside the stage. It had belonged to the centre’s first caretaker, and it was meant to lead the festival parade that evening. At six fifteen, the lights flickered. When they came back on, the lantern was gone. The side door stood ajar, and a trail of damp footprints crossed the floor toward the kitchen. Gabriel’s stomach tightened: the parade would begin in less than an hour. Three people had been nearby. Eli, the caretaker, was checking the heating system. Noor, a baker, had brought a tray of cinnamon buns. And Amelia, a stage helper, had been carrying boxes past the display table. A blue wool thread clung to the tablecloth. Amelia wore a blue scarf, so Gabriel wondered if he had taken the lantern. Then Noor pointed to the footprints. “Those are too wide for Amelia’s boots,” she said. Gabriel noticed that each print had a small crescent-shaped notch at the heel. She had seen that mark before: Eli’s work boots had a chipped heel. Just then, a faint metallic clink came from behind the stage curtain. Gabriel pulled the curtain aside. The lantern was tucked safely in a storage crate. Eli hurried over, looking embarrassed. He admitted that he had moved it when a leak began dripping above the display. He meant to tell Gabriel, but the lights flickered and he got distracted while checking the heater. The damp footprints were his. The blue thread? It had come from a festival decoration caught on the tablecloth—not Amelia’s scarf after all.
