About this illustration

Pizza cut into 6 equal slices with 3 remaining. Visual fraction model showing 3/6. For teaching fractions, part-whole, equivalent fractions.

What 3/6 of a pizza looks like

This pizza was cut into 6 equal sixths and 3 of them are shown, so it is a picture of the fraction 3/6, which simplifies to 1/2. That is 50% of the whole pizza.

  • The bottom number of a fraction says how many equal parts the whole was cut into, and the top number says how many of them you have. This pizza was cut into 6 equal sixths, and 3 are still there, so the fraction is 3/6.
  • The slices have to be equal for the fraction to mean anything. A pizza cut into 6 equal pieces gives each piece 360° ÷ 6 = 60° of the turn around the middle, and the 3 slices shown take up 180°.
  • 3/6 and 3/6 together make the whole pizza: 3/6 + 3/6 = 6/6 = 1.
  • 3/6 and 1/2 are the same amount of pizza written two ways — dividing both numbers by 3 does not change how much there is. That is what equivalent fractions means, and it is easier to see on a pizza than on a number line.
