Skip counting by 2s to 100

This hundreds chart covers 1 to 100 with every multiple of 2 highlighted. Counting in 2s goes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and on, 50 numbers in all, finishing at 100. Each highlighted number is 2 more than the one before it.

  • Skip counting in 2s and the 2 times table are the same list of numbers reached two ways: by repeatedly adding 2, or by multiplying 2 by 1, 2, 3 and so on. The 50th multiple is 2 × 50 = 100.
  • 100 ÷ 2 = 50, which is why 50 multiples of 2 fit inside 100 and the last one lands exactly on 100.
  • Highlighting the multiples on a chart ten columns wide turns the 2 times table into a shape. The pattern of the shading is the point — it is the same fact seen as a picture rather than a list.
  • Counting backwards down the highlighted numbers is division practice: from 100, taking away 2 at a time reaches 0 after exactly 50 steps.
  • A number is a multiple of 2 if counting in 2s lands on it exactly — 100 does, as does every even number. A number sitting between two highlighted squares does not, and how far past the lower one it sits is the remainder when it is divided by 2.
