What is subitising?

Subitising is the ability to look at a small collection of objects and know how many there are without counting. When you glance at a dice showing five dots and instantly say "five", you are subitising. You did not count 1-2-3-4-5 — you saw the pattern and knew.

The word comes from the Latin subitus, meaning "sudden", and was coined by researcher E. L. Kaufman and colleagues in 1949 to describe this quick, effortless recognition of small quantities. It is one of the earliest number skills children develop, often before they can reliably count, and it sits at the foundation of everything that follows in early maths.

The two types of subitising

Educational researcher Douglas Clements drew a clear line between two forms of subitising in 1999, and the distinction matters for how you teach it.

Perceptual subitising is the instant, automatic recognition of very small quantities — usually up to about three to five items. A child sees three counters and just knows it is three. This is the version most adults use without thinking.

Conceptual subitising is recognising a larger quantity by seeing it as smaller groups. A child looks at a domino with six dots and sees "three and three", or reads a ten frame with eight counters as "five and three". Conceptual subitising is where subitising connects to addition, part-part-whole thinking and mental strategies — it is the goal you are building towards.

Why subitising matters

Subitising is not a party trick — it is a load-bearing skill. Children who can subitise:

  • Grasp cardinality (the idea that the last number counted tells you how many) more securely.
  • Move off counting by ones and start using groups, which is the doorway to efficient calculation.
  • See numbers as compositions — 7 is 5 and 2, or 4 and 3 — which is exactly the flexible thinking that number bonds and addition facts depend on.
  • Build a mental image of quantity, so "eight" becomes a picture (a full row of five plus three) rather than just a word.

In the Australian Curriculum, subitising appears explicitly in Foundation-year number, where students are expected to name and represent small quantities using subitising rather than counting each item. It reappears through the early years as the arrangements grow larger and the emphasis shifts to conceptual grouping.

How to teach subitising: a step-by-step progression

    Start perceptual, to 3 or 4

    Flash a dot card or hold up fingers showing one, two, three or four. Ask 'How many?' and expect an instant answer. Keep quantities inside the perceptual range so children succeed without counting.

    Use quick images (flash and hide)

    Show the pattern for only two to three seconds, then cover it. The short flash forces recognition rather than counting. This routine is often called a 'dot talk' or 'quick image' and works as a five-minute daily warm-up.

    Ask 'how did you see it?'

    After each flash, ask children to explain what they saw. One child sees six as 'three and three', another as 'five and one'. Naming these groupings is the bridge from perceptual to conceptual subitising.

    Introduce the ten frame

    A ten frame is two rows of five. Flash it with different amounts and let children use the full row of five as an anchor: eight is 'a full five and three more'. This builds subitising to 10 and secure benchmarks of 5 and 10.

    Move beyond regular dice and domino patterns to scattered, irregular and mixed arrangements. Recognising five in a line, a die pattern and a random scatter shows the number is understood, not just the picture memorised.

    Use a rekenrek (two rows of ten beads, grouped in fives) or double ten frames so children see 14 as 'ten and four'. This is the same grouping skill that later powers mental addition and place value.

Standard 1-6 dice patterns are ready-made subitising images. Roll and name, or match dominoes with the same total seen as groups.

Flash a ten frame and ask how many. Children lean on the row of five to name eight as 'five and three'.

Finger patterns

Show a number on fingers in one quick movement — not counting up. Then show the same number a different way (four as 2 and 2, or 3 and 1).

Splat / hidden counters

Show a group, cover part of it, and ask how many are hidden if the total is known. Links subitising to part-part-whole.

Call quantities as dot images; students cover the matching numeral. Fast, playful and repeatable with new cards.

Slide beads in one push to make a number, then ask children to name it as tens and fives before counting.

Common mistakes to avoid

Only ever using dice patterns. If children only see the standard die arrangement, they memorise the picture instead of the quantity. Mix regular, irregular and scattered layouts.

Leaving the image up too long. A quick image needs to be quick. If the card stays visible, children revert to counting and the subitising is lost. Two to three seconds is plenty.

Skipping the 'how did you see it?' step. The explanation is where the maths happens. Sharing that six can be seen as 3 and 3, 5 and 1, or 4 and 2 is what turns subitising into flexible number knowledge.

Pushing past 5 too soon. Perceptual subitising tops out around five. To go higher, teach the grouping first — do not expect a child to subitise nine scattered dots in one glance.
