Clear Character Speech

Help Tane and Finn tell their story clearly. Use speech marks around the exact words a character says. When the spoken words come after said, use a comma before the opening speech mark. Put full stops, question marks and exclamation marks inside the closing speech mark.

Spot clear speech

Read each choice carefully. Think about where the spoken words begin and end.

5.Write one sentence in which Tane warns Finn to be careful near the branch. Include a speech tag such as “Tane called”.
6.Write a question Finn could ask Tane about getting the kite down. Use a speech tag and put the question mark in the right place.
7.Add a speech tag to these spoken words and punctuate the whole sentence: “I can hold the string.” Show that Tane said them.
8.Match each spoken line to the punctuation mark that belongs at the end of the speech. Line A: “Watch out” (a warning). Line B: “Where did it go” (a question). Line C: “We got it back” (a statement).
