Community Data Collection

A community centre wants to plan its weekend activities. Use the survey data below to check how data is collected, summarised and interpreted. Show your working where useful.

The survey

A volunteer asked 20 people leaving the community centre: “Which activity would you most like to attend on a Saturday?” Each person chose one activity. Their responses were recorded in the tally table.

1.What was the survey’s investigative question, and what was the categorical variable recorded?

Check the method

The volunteer surveyed people who were already at the community centre. No one was asked more than once, and each person could choose just one activity.

6.Is this likely to be a representative sample of everyone in the neighbourhood? Explain one possible source of bias.

7.Which question is less leading and more suitable for a fair survey? A: “Wouldn’t you prefer fun sports to boring crafts?” B: “Which activity would you most like to attend?”
