Exploring Narrative Elements

Read the original story below, then answer the questions. Use details from the story to support your ideas. In the final task, plan a new ending of your own.

The Bell Beneath the Jetty

On Saturday morning, Sione hurried down to the old jetty at Ōhope Beach. The tide was low, and a silver bell lay half-buried in the sand beneath the wooden posts. When she lifted it, a tiny note slipped out: “Please return me to the boat shed before the tide turns.” Sione looked towards the shore. The boat shed stood beyond a stretch of slippery rocks. Dark clouds were gathering, and she could hear the wind rising. Her cousin Hugo wanted to run back for help, but Sione noticed a line of orange shells leading across the rocks. They seemed to mark a safe path. “Stay close and step where the shells are,” Sione said. Together they crossed carefully, carrying the bell between them. A wave splashed over their shoes, but they reached the shed just as the first heavy drops began to fall. Inside, an old woman was searching a shelf. When she saw the bell, her face brightened. It had belonged to her family’s small sailing boat, which had been missing for years. She thanked the children and told them the shells had been placed there long ago to guide people safely across the rocks. Sione and Hugo walked home in the rain, pleased that they had followed the clues and helped return something precious.
