SIMILE - Compares two things using "like" or "as"

Example: She runs like the wind. / He's as brave as a lion.

METAPHOR - Compares two things by saying one IS the other

Example: Time is money. / Her voice is music to my ears.

PERSONIFICATION - Gives human qualities to non-human things

Example: The wind whispered through the trees. / The sun smiled down on us.

HYPERBOLE - Extreme exaggeration for effect

Example: I've told you a million times! / I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

ALLITERATION - Repetition of the same starting sound

Example: Peter Piper picked pickled peppers. / Big blue balloon.

ONOMATOPOEIA - Words that sound like what they describe

Example: Buzz, crash, sizzle, bang, meow, woof.

Simile: Look for "like" or "as" - SIMple to spot!

Metaphor: No "like" or "as" - it says something IS something else

Personification: Animals, objects, or nature acting like PEOPLE

Hyperbole: So over the top it can't be true!
