Identity Through Movement

Explore how movement can communicate parts of who you are. You may draw on your interests, strengths, values, places that matter to you, or feelings. Share only what you feel comfortable sharing. If working with others, listen respectfully and make space for everyone’s ideas.

Find your movement ideas

There is no single right way to represent an identity. Choose details you are happy to share.

1.Choose one quality you would like your movement to communicate, such as confidence, curiosity, calm, joy, or determination. What quality will you explore, and why?

2.Try a small, medium, and large version of one gesture. Which size best communicates your chosen quality, and what makes it effective?

3.Create a movement motif: a short action or gesture that represents one idea about you. Describe the action and the idea it represents.

4.A movement can change meaning when its energy changes. If your motif is slow and smooth at first, what might it communicate if you repeat it quickly and sharply?

Build a movement story

Plan a short sequence with a beginning, a change, and an ending. Use space safely and make choices that suit your group.

5.Plan a 30-second solo or group movement story. What idea will connect the sequence, and what do you want an audience to notice?

Beginning: introduce the idea

Middle: develop or change the idea

Ending: show what has changed

Draw the pathway your movement will travel through the space. Add arrows, a starting point, and an ending point. Keep enough distance from other movers.

6.If you create this sequence with others, how could you combine different movement ideas so everyone contributes without anyone having to share something personal?

7.A classmate’s movement represents a tradition or experience you do not know much about. What is a respectful way to respond before using or adapting that movement?

8.After rehearsing, name one movement choice that communicated your idea clearly and one change that could make your sequence safer or easier for others to understand.
