The Mountain That Came to Rest

Long ago, a warrior named Mauao lived beside the ocean. He loved a beautiful mountain who lived inland, but she did not return his love. Heartbroken, Mauao asked the patupaiarehe, the mysterious people of the forest, to carry him to the sea so he could drown his sorrow. At night, the patupaiarehe wrapped ropes around Mauao and dragged him towards the coast. They pulled with all their strength. As they travelled, they carved a deep path through the land. When the first light of dawn appeared, the patupaiarehe had to flee into the forest. They left Mauao beside the ocean, where he had finally come to rest. The people named the great mountain Mauao. Today, many people call it Mount Maunganui. It stands beside Tauranga Moana, looking out over the harbour and the sea. Its winding track climbs towards the summit, where visitors can see boats, beaches and distant hills. The story explains how Mauao came to stand by the water, while reminding us that the mountain is a treasured place with stories of its own.
