Plan, build and draft an imaginative story. Use the writing space to develop your ideas.

Plan your story

Choose your own story ideas. There are many possible answers.

1.Invent a main character. Write their name and two words that describe their personality or appearance.

2.Choose a place for your story. Describe it with three words that help a reader picture it.

3.What goes wrong, or what surprising event starts your character's adventure?

Build stronger sentences

A subordinating conjunction joins an extra idea to a main idea. Examples include because, although, while, when, since and if.

4.Select every word that can be a subordinating conjunction.

5.Finish this complex sentence with an idea of your own: “Although the path was muddy, …”

6.Write a sentence about your story that uses because to explain why something happens.

7.Choose two adjectives for a character and two adjectives for a setting from this list: daring, thoughtful, puzzled, welcoming, shadowy, sparkling, peaceful, crowded, mossy, ancient.

8.Improve this sentence by adding at least two adjectives: “A boy ran beside the river.”

Map out the beginning, middle and end

Jot down what happens in each part before you start your draft.

9.What will readers learn about your character and setting at the beginning of your story?

10.What problem or adventure will happen in the middle of your story?

11.How will your story end? Explain what happens to the problem or adventure.

Draft your narrative

Write a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Describe your character and setting with adjectives. Include at least two complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions.

12.Write your narrative draft. Use your plan, add descriptive details and check that the events make sense in order.

Look back at your draft

Use your writing to decide which statements are true.

13.Tick each feature you included: adjectives describing a character; adjectives describing a setting; a complex sentence with because; another complex sentence with a subordinating conjunction; a clear beginning; a middle with a problem or event; and an ending.

14.Name one part of your story you would like to make even better in your next draft.
