"God Defend New Zealand" was written as a poem by Thomas Bracken in the 1870s. John Joseph Woods composed the music in 1876. It became our national anthem in 1977, exactly 100 years after it was first performed! The anthem can be sung in both English and te reo Māori. The Māori version is called "Aotearoa" and was translated by Thomas Henry Smith in 1878.
