📖 Reading Text: The Treaty of Waitangi (6th February 1840)

On 6th February 1840, an important document was signed at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. This document was called the Treaty of Waitangi. It was an agreement between the British Crown and many Māori chiefs from around New Zealand.

The Treaty had three main parts. First, Māori chiefs agreed that Queen Victoria would be the ruler of New Zealand. Second, Māori people would keep their land, forests, and fishing areas. Third, Māori people would have the same rights as British citizens.

However, there were problems with the Treaty. The English and Māori versions said different things. This caused confusion and arguments that lasted for many years. Today, we still talk about the Treaty because it is New Zealand's founding document.
