NZ Historical Events Comparison

Compare the New Zealand Wars (often called the Land Wars) with the Māori Renaissance. Read the information first, then use evidence from it to explain similarities, differences and connections. Dates and descriptions are simplified for this activity.

Two periods of change

THE NEW ZEALAND WARS: A series of conflicts took place from the 1840s to the 1870s. Causes differed between places and included disputes over land, sovereignty and the Crown’s expansion of control. Some Māori fought to defend their land and authority; others supported the Crown or sought to protect their communities. The conflicts brought deaths, disruption and major land confiscations. The effects were not the same for every iwi or region. THE MĀORI RENAISSANCE: From the late 1960s and especially the 1970s, Māori activism and cultural revitalisation became increasingly visible. Māori groups and individuals campaigned for recognition of te reo Māori, Māori rights and the effects of earlier land loss. The movement included protests, petitions, language initiatives and cultural work—not armed conflict. The 1975 Māori Land March and the establishment of the Waitangi Tribunal in 1975 were important developments. The Tribunal began investigating claims about breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and, later, historical claims as well.

7.A museum label says, “The New Zealand Wars had the same causes everywhere.” Use evidence from the reading to explain why this claim is too simple.

9.Explain one way the effects of the New Zealand Wars connect to the aims of the Māori Renaissance. Include a detail from each period.
10.Write a one-sentence thesis for a comparison essay. It should state one meaningful similarity and one important difference between the periods.
