One-Minute Speech Planner

A local kiwi recovery project is asking for support. Plan a one-minute speech to encourage your audience to help protect kiwi. You can use the project details below, then practise your speech with a partner. Keep your ideas clear, specific and easy to say aloud.

Project briefing

Nikau and Isla are helping a kiwi recovery project. Volunteers check predator-control traps, keep dogs on leads near kiwi habitat, and share safety information with neighbours. The project needs more local people to join a weekend information event. Your speech will help explain why kiwi need protection and suggest one practical action.

Shape your message

Plan a speech of about one minute. A strong speech has a hook, a clear message, reasons or examples, and a memorable ending.

1.Choose the audience you want to persuade: younger students, whānau, or local volunteers. What might this audience already know about kiwi?

2.What do you most want your audience to do after hearing your speech? Choose one action and explain why it would help.

3.Which opening is most likely to catch an audience’s attention? Choose one and say why.

Today I am going to talk about kiwi.
Imagine hearing a kiwi call in the bush at night. What could we do to help that bird stay safe?
I have three points and then I will finish.

4.Write your main message in one sentence. Use this frame if it helps: “We can help kiwi by…”

5.Plan two supporting points for your speech. Give a specific example for each point from the project briefing.

6.Fill in the linking word that best connects the ideas: “Keep dogs on leads near kiwi habitat this can help protect kiwi.” Choose from because, finally, or for example.

7.Write a closing sentence that reminds your audience of your message and gives them one clear action to take.

Practise and listen

Take turns giving your one-minute speech. While your partner speaks, listen for their main message and one useful example. Then give kind, specific feedback.

8.True or false? A helpful listener can show attention by facing the speaker and waiting until they have finished before responding.

9.After listening to your partner’s speech, write their main message and one example they used. If you are working alone, write what you want a listener to remember from your own speech.

10.Give your partner one specific strength and one next step. Use respectful feedback, such as “Your example helped me understand…” or “Try pausing after…”

11.Choose one speaking skill to practise in your next attempt: clear volume, steady pace, expression, or looking up. Explain how it will help your audience.
