Model Story: The Silent Morning

The shrill buzz of my alarm clock pierced through the morning stillness like a knife through butter. I fumbled blindly across my bedside table, my fingers desperately searching for my phone to hit the snooze button. Instead, they found only the cold, smooth surface of wood.

Panic crept up my spine like icy fingers. Where was my phone? I bolted upright, my heart hammering against my ribs as I scanned my cluttered bedroom. There it was, lying face-down on the carpet like a fallen soldier. I snatched it up, expecting to see the familiar glow of notifications flooding my lock screen.

Nothing.

The screen stared back at me, eerily blank except for the time: 7:23 AM. No Instagram hearts. No Snapchat streaks. No TikTok videos waiting to devour my morning. I tapped frantically at the apps, but they had vanished completely, leaving behind empty spaces like missing teeth in a smile.

Stumbling downstairs, I found Mum standing motionless in the kitchen, her coffee mug frozen halfway to her lips. Her eyes held the same bewildered expression I'd seen in the mirror moments before.

"It's all gone," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the gentle hum of the refrigerator. "Facebook, Instagram, everything. Like it never existed."

The silence that followed was deafening. No notification pings. No video sounds bleeding through headphones. Just the natural symphony of our house: the tick of the grandfather clock, the whistle of wind through the window frames, the distant chirping of birds greeting the dawn.

For the first time in years, I actually heard my own thoughts clearly. They weren't competing with the constant digital chatter that usually filled my mind. Outside, the autumn leaves danced in the gentle breeze, their golden colours more vibrant than any filter I'd ever seen. The morning light streaming through our kitchen window painted everything in warm, honey-coloured hues.

Maybe, I thought as I poured myself a glass of orange juice, this wouldn't be such a terrible thing after all.
