The Missing Blue

On Saturday morning, Nathan, Sione and Finn arrived at Harbour Street Art Gallery to see the new exhibition. Their favourite painting was a large blue-and-gold picture of a waka crossing the sea. Before the gallery opened, they noticed a small card beside it: “Visitors may add one paper wave to the sea.” The gallery’s young artists’ display would be judged that afternoon, and the friends hoped their class’s artwork would be chosen. When the doors opened, the friends joined the visitors making paper waves. Nathan folded theirs carefully, Sione painted it blue, and Finn wrote their class name on the back. They set it on the table beside the painting. A few minutes later, a gust from the entrance swept through the gallery. The paper wave slid off the table and disappeared among the exhibition stands. The friends searched carefully, but the gallery was filling with people. They worried that someone might step on the wave or mistake it for rubbish. Sione suggested asking the gallery guide for help. The guide closed the entrance doors to stop the draught, then gave the friends a torch. Nathan spotted a tiny blue corner beneath a display bench. Finn reached underneath and pulled out the paper wave. It was crumpled, but the writing on the back was still clear. Together, they smoothed the wave and placed it in the display box, where it could not blow away. That afternoon, their class’s artwork received a special mention for its teamwork. The friends were proud—not only of the mention, but also of how they had solved the problem together.
