Mēnā kāore koe i te mōhio, pātai māhaki ki te tangata whenua.” A group of students visits Te Puna Marae for a hui. Before the visit, Maia, the organiser, explains the guidance given by the marae kaitiaki: wait to be called, follow the tangata whenua’s directions about where to sit, and leave shoes outside before entering the wharenui. The pōwhiri begins with a karanga, followed by whaikōrero and waiata. After the welcome, the group shares kai. Maia says, “These are examples of this marae’s kawa. Care for visitors is also shown by preparing food, listening to speakers and looking after the visitors.” She adds, “The kawa at another marae may be different. If you are unsure, ask the tangata whenua respectfully.”
