What Are Fractions?
A fraction shows part of a whole The top number is called the numerator The bottom number is called the denominator Example: 1/2 means 1 part out of 2 equal parts
Fractions in Everyday Life
Fraction Detective
Look around the classroom Find 3 examples of fractions Share with a partner Examples: half the whiteboard, quarter of the window, third of a book shelf
Equivalent Fractions
Different fractions can represent the same amount 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 We can multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number This doesn't change the value of the fraction
Comparing Fractions
{"left":"Same denominator: compare numerators\n3/8 is bigger than 2/8","right":"Different denominators: find common denominator\n1/2 = 4/8, so 1/2 is bigger than 3/8"}
Quick Check: Which is Bigger?
A) 2/5 or 3/5? B) 1/3 or 1/4? C) 3/6 or 1/2? Think about it, then discuss with your neighbor!
Adding Fractions
Same denominator: add the numerators 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 Different denominators: find equivalent fractions first 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
Fraction Café
Work in pairs You're sharing pizzas at a café Customer orders: 1/4 pizza + 1/2 pizza How much pizza total? Show your working!
