🌡️ The Heatwave Story

Read this story about Jake's hot summer day:

It was the hottest day of the year and nine-year-old Jake was feeling very warm indeed. The temperature had reached 35°C and there wasn't a cloud in the bright blue sky. Jake's mum had told him to stay indoors during the afternoon when the sun was strongest. "Let's think of ways to keep cool," she suggested with a smile.

Jake filled a large bowl with cold water and dipped his feet in it whilst sitting in the shade of their garden umbrella. The cool water felt wonderful against his hot skin. Next, he made ice lollies using orange juice and froze them in the freezer for an hour. When they were ready, Jake shared them with his little sister Emma who had been feeling hot and bothered all morning.

In the evening, when the temperature dropped to a more comfortable 28°C, Jake's family decided to have a picnic in the local park. They packed plenty of cold drinks and sat under the big oak tree near the pond. Jake watched the ducks swimming in the cool water and wished he could join them. "Tomorrow we'll go to the swimming pool," promised Dad, seeing Jake's longing look. Jake smiled happily, already imagining the refreshing splash of cool water all around him.
