Wartime Diary Entry Paper

Imagine you are a young person living in Britain during the Second World War. Use the situation below to plan and write a believable diary entry. You are creating a fictional character, not writing about yourself. Include a date, first-person thoughts and feelings, and details that bring the day to life.

A day on the home front

It is an autumn evening in 1941. Your character lives with their family in a British town. Food is rationed, so the family uses ration books when shopping. An air-raid warning sounded during the afternoon, and the family waited in a shelter until it was safe to return. Earlier, your character helped a neighbour carry a heavy basket. Now they are home, writing privately before bed. Choose which details to use and add your own believable ideas.

Build your diary entry

Complete the tasks in order. Your answers will become the ingredients for your final entry.

1.Give your fictional diarist an age and a first name. Write one sentence explaining what they most want to remember about today.
2.Write a suitable date line for a fictional diary entry set in autumn 1941. You may choose any day in October or November.
3.Imagine the family shelter during the air-raid warning. Write one detail the diarist might see, one they might hear, and one they might feel. Keep each detail believable.
4.Choose one feeling the diarist had during the warning. Write a sentence that shows this feeling through an action or physical reaction, rather than simply naming it.
5.Use the ration-book details in the situation above as inspiration. Write a sentence about a food or shopping moment that could belong in this character’s day. You may invent a believable detail about the family’s shopping.
6.The diarist helped a neighbour carry a heavy basket. Write two sentences describing the moment and showing how the diarist felt afterwards.
7.Number these events from 1 to 4 in the order that makes sense for your diary entry: returning home from the shelter; helping the neighbour; hearing the warning; writing before bed.
8.Write the first two sentences of your entry. Begin with “Dear Diary,” and make the reader curious about the day.
9.Write a complete diary entry for your fictional character. Include the date, a first-person voice, at least two events from the day, a sensory detail, the character’s thoughts or feelings, and a closing line. Use paragraphs if they help your ideas flow.
10.Re-read your entry. Write down one change you made or would make to improve it. Check for capital letters, full stops, past-tense verbs and clear paragraphs.
