- Class Size: 25 students
- Theme: Understanding Story Elements (Characters, Setting, Plot)
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe key story elements (characters, setting, and plot).
- Explain how characters respond to events and challenges.
- Retell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Engage in collaborative discussions to deepen comprehension.
Lesson Structure
1️⃣ Warm-Up Activity (15 minutes) – Story Clue Hunt
📌 Objective: Activate prior knowledge of story elements.
- Display five random objects/pictures related to a familiar story (e.g., "The Three Little Pigs").
- Ask students: What do these objects tell us about a story?
- Guide discussion about characters, setting, and events.
- Write down keywords on a chart to reinforce key vocabulary.
2️⃣ Read-Aloud & Discussion (45 minutes) – "A New Home" (Unit 2 Textbook)
📖 Objective: Identify characters, setting, and plot through guided reading.
-
Before Reading (10 min):
- Show the book cover. Ask: What do you think this story will be about?
- Introduce important vocabulary (e.g., relocate, journey, neighborhood).
-
During Reading (25 min):
- Read the story aloud, pausing to ask comprehension questions.
- Teacher prompts:
- Who is the main character?
- Where does the story take place?
- What problem does the character face?
- How does the character feel? What actions do they take?
-
After Reading (10 min):
- Draw a large "Story Mountain" on the board.
- Students work in pairs: Write or draw one part of the story (Beginning, Middle, or End).
- Share responses and arrange them on the Story Mountain.
3️⃣ Hands-On Learning (30 minutes) – Drama Time!
🎭 Objective: Deepen understanding of characters and plot through role-playing.
- Divide class into small groups. Assign each group a scene from the story.
- Students act out their scene, focusing on character actions and emotions.
- After each performance, students explain how their character felt and why.
- Teacher provides feedback and connects performances back to story elements.
4️⃣ Independent Practice (30 minutes) – Story Spinner Activity
✏ Objective: Strengthen textual analysis and narrative skills.
- Give students a "Story Elements Spinner" (Pre-made spinners with sections for Character, Setting, Problem, and Solution).
- Each student spins and writes/draws about the section they land on.
- Students share their responses in small groups.
5️⃣ Wrap-Up & Reflection (30 minutes) – Exit Ticket & Group Discussion
💬 Objective: Reinforce learning and allow student reflection.
- Exit Ticket (Written Response):
- "What was the most important thing you learned about stories today?"
- Group Discussion:
- How does understanding story elements help us enjoy reading?
Materials Needed
✅ Storybook ("A New Home" from Savvas myView)

Assessment & Differentiation
Formative Assessment:
✔ Observing student responses during discussions
✔ Checking completed Story Mountain organizers
✔ Evaluating Story Spinner written responses
Differentiation Strategies:
