Lesson Breakdown

1. Opening Activity and Review (10 minutes)

Activity: Begin with a brief interactive discussion reviewing key takeaways from the unit on professionalism and adaptability: What is professionalism? Why is adaptability important in the workplace? What challenges might require these skills?
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and prepare students to apply these concepts personally.
Method: Teacher asks open-ended questions to students, encouraging concise sharing.

2. Introduction to Personal Professional Development Plan (10 minutes)

Description: Teacher explains what a personal professional development plan is and why it is important for career growth.
Visual Aid: Project or write a sample plan on the board, highlighting:
- Goal statement
- Action steps
- Timeline
- Resources needed
Focus: Emphasize SMART goals to align with CCSS writing standards.

3. Guided Individual Reflection and Goal Setting (15 minutes)

Activity: Students individually reflect on their own strengths and areas for growth related to professionalism and adaptability.
Prompt questions:
- What professional skills do I want to improve?
- What adaptable behaviors can I develop further?
- How will these skills help me in future careers?
Output: Each student writes 1-2 SMART goals.

4. Developing the Personal Professional Development Plan (15 minutes)

Task: Using the provided template, students draft their personal professional development plans with the following sections:
- Professional goals (related to professionalism/adaptability)
- Action steps to achieve each goal (skills to learn, habits to build)
- Estimated timeline for progress
- Resources or support needed (mentors, courses, tools)
Teacher Role: Provide feedback and scaffold organization or language as needed. Encourage inclusion of actionable and realistic steps.

5. Sharing and Peer Feedback (8 minutes)

Format: Students partner up (or in small groups) to share their plans aloud and give constructive feedback focused on clarity and feasibility.
Guidelines: Use two stars and a wish – two positive feedback points and one suggestion.
Purpose: Build communication skills and refine plans based on peer input.

6. Closing and Reflection (2 minutes)

Summarize the lesson’s purpose and encourage students to revisit and update their plans regularly.
Brief exit ticket prompt: One professional or adaptable skill I will commit to improving first is __________ because __________.

Assessment

Formative: Observation during reflection, goal setting, and peer feedback phases.
Summative: Completed Personal Professional Development Plan assessed for alignment with SMART goal criteria, clarity, and realistic action steps.
