5 minutes Whole Class

• Attentional Grabber:
  • Start with a fun rhyming song to engage students.
  • Explain what rhyming words are, using simple examples like "cat" and "hat".

15 minutes Group Work

• Activity: Rhyming Flashcards
  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Provide each group with a set of word flashcards.
  • Each group will match flashcards with words that rhyme (e.g. "frog" and "log").
  • Rotate flashcards among groups to ensure exposure to a variety of words.

10 minutes Whole Class Demonstration

• Activity: Build a Rhyme
  • Gather students around a whiteboard.
  • Use magnetic letters to spell out a word, such as "cat".
  • Ask students to come up one by one to create a new rhyming word by changing the initial letter (e.g. "hat", "bat").

15 minutes Group Work

• Activity: Rhyming Word Chart
  • Each group will be given a chart with a starting word at the top.
  • Students will fill in the chart with as many rhyming words as they can.
  • Encourage groups to discuss and help each other spell the words correctly.

15 minutes Individual/Whole Group

• Activity: Rhyming Worksheet
  • Distribute a worksheet that has a list of words on one side and spaces to fill rhyming words on the other.
  • Allow students to work individually to match or write rhyming words.
  • After completion, come together as a group to review the answers and discuss any difficult words.
