Class Size: 50 students
Age Group: Year 9 (13-14 years old)
Curriculum Reference: English National Curriculum - KS3 (Reading & Writing: Developing Clarity & Coherence, Evaluating and Editing Own Writing)

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  1. Write a structured paragraph with a clear main idea, supported by relevant details.
  2. Use context clues to strengthen their writing.
  3. Peer review and provide constructive feedback on a partner’s paragraph.

Lesson Structure (60 minutes)

Starter Activity (10 minutes) – The Unscramble Challenge

  • Display a jumbled paragraph on the board (words or sentences out of order).
  • Ask students to rearrange it into a logical structure, ensuring the main idea is clear.
  • Discuss as a class:
    • What made it hard or easy?
    • How did you identify the main idea?
    • What clues helped structure it correctly?

Purpose: Activates prior knowledge and reinforces paragraph coherence.

Main Activity: Writing a Strong Paragraph (25 minutes)

Step 1: Teacher Modelling (7 minutes)

  • Write a short paragraph live on the board.
  • Highlight the main idea in one colour.
  • Underline supporting details (context clues) in another colour.
  • Demonstrate how to revise a weak paragraph by:
    • Removing irrelevant sentences.
    • Strengthening weak supporting details.

Step 2: Independent Writing Task (10 minutes)

  • Students choose one of the following prompts and write a 5-6 sentence paragraph:
    1. Why is teamwork important in school?
    2. What makes a good leader?
    3. Should mobile phones be banned in schools?
  • Success Criteria Displayed on Board:
✔ Clear main idea in the first sentence.
✔ At least two supporting details with context clues.
    ✔ Smooth flow of ideas.

Step 3: Self-Check & Refinement (3 minutes)

  • Students underline their main idea in their paragraph.
  • Swap paragraphs with desk partner and circle context clues in each other’s work.

Peer Review & Discussion (15 minutes)

Step 1: Focused Peer Feedback (7 minutes)

  • Each student gives their partner one strength and one area for improvement based on:
    • Is the main idea clear?
    • Do the supporting details strengthen it?
    • Are there unnecessary details?

Teacher monitors and assists pairs who need support.

Step 2: Whole-Class Reflection (8 minutes)

  • Ask 2-3 students to read out their paragraphs (anonymised if necessary).
  • Class gives positive feedback and suggestions.
  • Discuss: What makes some paragraphs more effective than others?

Plenary (10 minutes) – The 20-Word Summary Challenge

  • Exit Ticket Task: Students summarise today’s key learning in exactly 20 words.
  • Example: “A strong paragraph has a clear main idea, good details, and logical structure, making it easy for readers to understand.”
  • Select a few standout submissions to share.

Differentiation Strategies

🟢 For Support Learners:

  • Provide sentence starters and structured templates.
  • Allow verbal paragraph construction before writing.

🔵 For Advanced Learners:

  • Encourage use of complex sentence structures.
  • Task students with improving a weak paragraph alongside their own writing.

Assessment

Formative – Teacher monitors discussions and written work.
Peer Review – Students assess each other’s clarity and coherence.
Plenary Task – 20-word summary measures comprehension.

Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson)

  • Did students grasp the importance of structure?
  • Were peer reviews focused on clarity and coherence?
  • How confident were students in self-correcting their writing?
  • What can be improved for future writing tasks?

Resources Needed:

📝 Printed paragraph prompts
🎨 Highlighters for marking main ideas
🖊 Sentence starter sheets (for support learners)
📊 Peer Review Checklist

🔹 Extension Idea: Ask students to write a multi-paragraph response on their chosen prompt for homework.
