7 Habits Mastery

Objective

Students will analyze and apply Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to develop self-awareness, goal-setting strategies, and collaborative skills, aligning with Common Core English Language Arts standards for 11th grade.

Lesson Breakdown (45 minutes)

1. Warm-Up — Personal Reflection (5 minutes)

• Prompt: “Think quietly for 2 minutes: What habits do you already have that help you succeed? What habits hold you back?”
• Students write 3-4 sentences in their notebooks.
• Brief whole-class share (3 minutes) to encourage a safe, open environment.

2. Introduction & Purpose (3 minutes)

• Teacher briefly introduces Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits.
• Frame habits as tools for empowerment relevant to students’ personal, academic, and social lives.
• Explain today’s focus: Habit 1 - Be Proactive and Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind.

3. Close Reading: Excerpts on Habit 1 & Habit 2 (10 minutes)

• Students read excerpts silently (5 min).
• Teacher models how to annotate: Highlight key phrases, write questions or reactions in margins (2 min).
• Paired discussion (partnered by first name alphabetical order): Students discuss main ideas and personal connections (3 min).

4. Textual Evidence & Analysis Activity (10 minutes)

• Using the graphic organizer, students:
  • Cite two pieces of textual evidence for each habit.
  • Write a brief explanation of how the evidence supports each habit’s meaning.
• Focus on using explicit and implied textual evidence as per CCSS RI.11-12.1.

5. Collaborative Goal-Setting Task (10 minutes)

• Small groups (2-3 students each) brainstorm specific academic or personal goals they can achieve through Habit 1 or 2.
• Groups create a 2-3 sentence shared goal statement demonstrating proactivity or envisioning a final outcome.
• Groups present their goal and rationale clearly and persuasively (aligning with CCSS.SL.11-12.1).

6. Wrap-Up & Exit Ticket (7 minutes)

• Exit ticket prompt (written):
  • Choose one habit discussed today.
  • Write one actionable step you will take tomorrow to practice this habit.
• Teacher collects for quick formative assessment.
• Positive reinforcement: Teacher previews next week’s focus on Habit 3.

• Provide guided reading questions for students who need support.
• Extension: Students who finish early write a brief paragraph (per CCSS.W.11-12.2) explaining why the 7 Habits are relevant to their future success.
