Materials Needed

Printed or digital copies of the four short passages from TEAS READING PASSAGES (Modern Libraries, Puzzle Masters, Redirecting Puppy Biting, The Secret Stache)
TEAS READING question sets for each passage (refer to TEAS READING.pdf)
Writing journal or notebook
Pen or digital annotation tools
Timer for pacing

Lesson Procedure

1. Opening Activity (5 minutes)

Engage/Activate Prior Knowledge: Ask the student to quickly recall and share what they think makes a library "modern" or different today compared to the past.
Explain that today we will closely read four short passages, analyzing both content and questions designed to check comprehension and critical thinking.

2. Focused Reading & Annotation (15 minutes)

Text: "Modern Libraries as Community Hubs" The student will read the passage silently, annotating with a focus on:
Main ideas about how libraries have evolved.
Technologies mentioned.
Words with connotative meaning (e.g., "hubs").
Guided Questioning (teacher prompts):
What is the main idea of the passage?
Identify one example of a fact and one example of an opinion from the text.
What does the word "hubs" suggest about libraries in this context?
Text: "Puzzle Masters" Game Show Advertisement Read silently then answer:
What challenge do contestants face?
How does the tone of the passage contribute to the theme of competition?
Which other type of program contrasts with this show's theme?

3. Comparative Analysis (10 minutes)

Discuss the contrasting themes between "Puzzle Masters" and the "Redirecting Puppy Biting" passage.
Identify the main topic of each passage.
Determine the tone and purpose (entertainment vs. instructional).
How do fact/opinion differ in these texts?
Vocabulary in Context:
Define "deterrent" based on the puppy biting passage context.
Discuss the traditional versus modern roles of libraries by comparing information from the first passage with background knowledge.

4. Synthesis and Application (10 minutes)

Writing Task: The student will write one short paragraph that answers the question: How have libraries shifted from traditional to modern roles, and what evidence supports this change? Encourage citing specific examples from the passage and question set.
Oral Reflection: After writing, the student will verbally summarize key insights from the "The Secret Stache" excerpt, focusing on how mustaches illustrate cultural creativity and history.

5. Closing and Assessment (5 minutes)

Review the paragraph with the student, providing immediate feedback on use of textual evidence, clarity of main idea, and vocabulary understanding.
Daily Assessment Exit Question: What is one way understanding fact versus opinion can help when reading nonfiction texts? Have the student explain in their own words.

Differentiation & Extension

For deeper challenge: Have the student create their own short passage using one of the themes seen (technology in libraries, challenge & competition, dog training, or cultural artifact like mustaches). Then generate a ‘TEAS-style’ question for peer review.
For extra support: Scaffold annotation with guided highlighting or margin notes to focus on key aspects like main idea, supporting details, and vocabulary.

Notes for Teacher

Use a digital device with annotation capabilities if preferred by the student; this can help simulate "digital kiosks" mentioned in reading and build digital literacy.
The one-to-one format allows for personalized pacing and probing questions to ensure mastery of critical reading standards.
Encourage metacognitive reflection by having the student verbalize their thought process while answering questions.
