Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and connect. Teacher opens the array hook and learning intention slides and displays 3 rows of 4 dots, asking, “How many dots are there, and how can you prove it?” Students describe the array, give an equation such as 3 × 4 = 12, and share a strategy from the previous lesson.

  2. 4–9 min · Model fact strategies. Teacher uses the fact strategy slides to model 3 × 4, 4 × 6, and 3 × 6 with quick-drawn arrays, emphasizing repeated addition, doubling, and known facts; teacher demonstrates that 4 × 6 = 24 connects to 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Students build or sketch each array, explain one strategy, and help complete related fact families.

  3. 9–16 min · Guided array and fact-family practice. Teacher distributes the multiplication fluency and array worksheet and guides students through selected problems: draw an array for 3 × 6, complete 4 × 6 = ___, ___ × 3 = 18, and write the related division facts. Teacher checks each student’s reasoning before moving on. Students solve, label rows and columns, and use multiplication to check division.

  4. 16–21 min · Partner fact game. Teacher displays the partner game instruction slides and organizes two students as partners while the teacher joins the third student, rotating turns after each round. One player says a target fact from the 3, 4, or 6 family; the other answers, explains a strategy or related fact, and earns a point for a correct response. Students keep turns fair, explain answers aloud, and use a sketch or skip-counting when needed.

  5. 21–24 min · One-minute challenge. Teacher shows the one-minute challenge directions and directs students to complete the timed challenge on the multiplication fluency and array worksheet without help. After one minute, students stop, count only correct answers, record their score, and circle one fact or strategy to practice. Teacher reinforces that accuracy and explaining a strategy matter more than speed.

  6. 24–29 min · Word-problem application. Teacher presents the two problems on the word-problem and discussion slides: “There are 4 bags with 6 apples in each bag. How many apples are there?” and “A teacher puts 18 counters into groups of 3. How many groups can she make?” Students draw an equal-groups model or array, write an equation with a symbol for the unknown, solve, and explain how they know the answer is reasonable.

  7. 29–30 min · Exit reflection. Teacher hands out the success criteria exit ticket slips and asks students to indicate which criteria they met and write one fact strategy they will practice. Students complete the brief reflection and return it as they leave.
