Lesson Structure
1. Warm-Up Activity (8 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and set the stage for learning.
- Number Chain Game:
- The teacher says, "We’re going to play a number chain game! I’ll begin with a number between 0–20."
- Example: The teacher says "5," the first student adds “+3” to say “8,” and the next student subtracts “-2” to say “6.” Continue until all 30 students have participated.
Instructional Tip: Use the number line displayed on the whiteboard to visually track the growing chain.
2. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Objective: Introduce strategies for solving addition/subtraction problems within 20 using manipulatives.

- Demonstrate solving 8+6 using a ten frame and colored counters.
- "First, I’ll fill in my ten frame to make 10 by adding 2 from 6."
- "Now I have 10, and I have 4 left over. So, 10+4=14."
