Overview

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and review. Teacher displays a picture of a person running and asks, “What parts of the body must cooperate for this person to move and stay alive?” using the opening running image and question. Students think independently, then share two body parts or systems they believe are involved.

  2. 4–9 min · Direct instruction. Teacher uses the cells-to-organ-systems teaching slides to review the sequence: specialized cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs cooperate in organ systems that support the organism. Emphasize that each level has a job and depends on other levels; for example, muscle cells form muscle tissue, muscle tissue is part of the heart, and the heart works within the circulatory system. Students sketch the sequence and record one function for each level on the organization-chain worksheet.

  3. 9–12 min · Source reading. Teacher gives each group the short informational text included on the organization-chain worksheet and reads it aloud while students follow. Students underline one fact about specialized cells and circle one fact about how organs work together.

  4. 12–21 min · Group model. Teacher places students in groups of four or five and displays the group-model instructions and example. Each group uses the worksheet spaces to construct an organization chain for one example, such as the digestive system, respiratory system, or circulatory system.   6. 27–30 min · Plenary and exit response. Teacher revisits the opening question with the final summary and exit prompt. Students complete the final question on the organization-chain worksheet: “Explain how specialized cells, tissues, and organs work together to help a multicellular organism survive.” Collect responses as students leave.
