Students will be able to analyze a character's traits, motivations, and emotions in a text and organize this information in a character study organizer.

• Whiteboard and markers
• Projector and screen
• Printed copies of a short story or excerpt (appropriate for 3rd Grade)
• Character Study Organizer worksheets (one per student)
• Pencils and colored pencils

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-Up (5 minutes):
   Greet the class warmly and ask them about their favorite storybook character. What makes that character interesting? Record a few examples on the whiteboard.

2. Explanation of Lesson Objective (5 minutes):
   Explain that today we will be "character detectives" and examine a character from a story to understand what makes them unique.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Read Aloud & Model (10 minutes):
   • Choose a short story or excerpt to read aloud. As you read, emphasize expressions and emotions to bring characters to life.
   • Model analyzing a character's traits and motivations using a pre-filled part of the Character Study Organizer on the board. Show how to record traits, motivations, feelings, and key actions.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Group Activity (10 minutes):
   • Divide students into small groups of 4-5.
   • Provide each group with a Character Study Organizer worksheet.
   • Ask each group to pick a character from another story you’ve provided.
   • Guide students as they discuss and fill out the worksheet, identifying and noting the character's traits, motivations, and emotions based on the text.

1. Individual Assignment (10 minutes):
   • Distribute a different short story or an excerpt to each student.
   • Each student completes a Character Study Organizer worksheet on their own with a new character.

1. Share and Reflect (5 minutes):
   • Invite a few students to share something interesting they discovered about their character.
