  4. 16–25 min · You do: independent practice. Distribute the four-operation picture problem worksheet. Students solve the four pictured one-step problems and complete the operation question: “Each and equal groups often suggest which operation?” Require a picture, equation, or short explanation for at least two problems. Students should circle the operation first, then solve and check. Read every problem aloud, pause to highlight the action, and allow calculator use after the class model for students who need it.

  5. 25–28 min · Partner check and discuss. Use the checking and discussion slides to display answers without immediately revealing the operation. Partners compare one solution using the prompts, “The action is ___,” “I chose ___ because ___,” and “I checked by ___.” Ask one pair to explain how multiplication and division can describe equal groups in different ways.

  6. 28–30 min · Exit assessment. Finish with the question stems exit ticket slips. Each student answers one prompt independently: “What action helps you choose multiplication?” or “How do you check an answer?” Collect the slips with the worksheet and quickly review whether each student identified an action, selected an operation, solved, and checked.
